I had a very disappointing experience at this clinic a few days ago. I waited a few days to resist the urge to leave an emotional, scathing review. I do, however feel the need to document what happened, in hope that the doctor and staff will read it and reevaluate the way they respond to walk-in patients. I am from Wisconsin, visiting my family in Union for the holiday. I woke up on the morning of Dec 21 with sudden paralysis on the right side of my face. I couldn't smile on that side and couldn't keep water in my mouth. After a quick web search there seemed to be two possible reasons, (1) a stroke, or (2) Bell's Palsy. My sister experienced severe Bell's Palsy about 20 years ago. She was treated at Hancock Chiropractic. She said they had some kind of electronic treatment that provided her with very good results. I was optimistic that my condition was Bell's Palsy and not a stroke, so I took my sister's advice. I found Hancock on Google and went directly there. When I walked in, I told the receptionist what had happened. She didn't ask me any questions, but she excused herself to speak to the doctor. She came back a minute later and reported, " He said there's nothing he can do for you." The doctor never saw my face. There was no suggestion for a different place to go (perhaps the ER). There was no follow up whatsoever, just a smug little smile. I never argued with the receptionist, but I did follow up with one question. I asked, " Do you know what kind of treatment my sister may have had here?" The receptionist seemed uncharacteristically annoyed at the question and told me she had no idea. After a moment of silence, I left. No other words were spoken. I was dismissed as if I were a drunk vagrant who wandered into the clinic looking for a handout. My sister followed up with a phone call and learned that this clinic no longer does this treatment. That's okay. I understand that. But please, give me the respect of talking to me and taking me seriously. My reason for reporting this incident is this. When a 65-year-old man appears at a medical facility (chiropractic or otherwise), with sudden facial paralysis he should be taken seriously. Anyone with rudimentary medical training knows that this could be very serious. I had no diagnosis of Bell's Palsy so the receptionist should have immediately referred me to the doctor. The most surprising part is that the doctor didn't take the time to walk out and look at me. I don't know what she reported to the doctor, so I don't know what information he had. Regardless, he should have taken a moment to look at my face to rule out a stroke. In my opinion this interaction shows a severe lack of empathy, and also a breach of standard practice. I can only describe it as a coldness and lack of caring. Perhaps I'm wrong and on any other occasion things would have been different. I am not terribly familiar with Philadelphia but upon leaving, I found an Urgent Care clinic a few blocks away. As soon as I walked in and reported my symptoms, they pushed me to the front of the line, just in case I was having a stroke. The receptionist, nurse, and nurse practitioner were very gracious and helpful. The practitioner told me he believed it to be Bell's Palsy and he gave me prescriptions and instructions. It felt good to find a competent and caring medical group. I am not looking to make trouble, and I don't want anything from Hancock Chiropractic. As I said earlier, I feel the need to make this report, in hopes that they will realize that as a medical provider they have a few basic responsibilities to people who report with symptoms. On this occasion they failed miserably and I would not recommend this clinic unless they realize how serious this kind of inaction could be. As a follow up, I still have facial paralysis but with any luck it should improve over the next few weeks. Thanks to Fast Pace Health - Urgent Care. R Dickerson, Eau Claire Wisconsin
